McCleery took his experiences from UNL to make a success of himself as a reporter, editor, playwright, author and teacher.Īs a journalist he has been a reporter on the Omaha World-Herald, the Hastings Daily Tribune and Life magazine and has had editing jobs at the Washington bureau of The Associated Press, the Ladies Home Journal, the New York newspaper PM and of University, the Princeton University quarterly. Eventually a few of the plays he had written were performed while he was in college. Through high school plays and the Kosmit Klub, he found his interest in productions. McCleery remembers many organizations he was involved in, including the Innocents Society and the Kosmit Klub, an organization for drama. That was how McCleery got a job on the campus newspaper on the first day of school. “A friend of mine needed a story written for the paper,” he says. University Hall was the center of the journalism school at the time, he says, and the Daily Nebraskan was in the basement. “Many of the building names have changed.” McCleery left New Jersey to visit Lincoln in 1991 for his 60th reunion where he received an Alumni Achievement Award. He likes to talk about the many places he has been, including UNL. William McCleery enjoys looking back on old memories and how his career has changed during the past 64 years.
